Making sense of privacy policies
Jan 2023 - May 2025When COVID reached Brunei, I started using more and more online tools and, for the first time, started paying attention to privacy policies and cookies. Unsurprisingly, I understood very little of what I was agreeing to but around the same time, I discovered WordPress and started building a website to help myself make sense of it.
That research led me to ToS;DR, a community already rating and summarizing these documents. Although they had a free API, I had no idea how to use one yet, so I embedded their website into mine as an iframe. ToS;DR was also the first service I ever donated to. You can donate to them here.
Simplify Me. eventually grew beyond that first version, with my own summaries and later AI-assisted explanations, but undoubtedly ToS;DR stayed an important foundation. Most of the project was me learning as I went and trying to make dense information easier to understand while not declaring the original documents as unnecessary.
